Student Success

Mama Hellen’s School’s central mission is to provide quality education and help students thrive in South Sudan. Throughout the years, Mama Hellen’s School has had a positive impact on its students and the surrounding community.

Mama Hellen’s School is committed to attracting and retaining high quality teachers who are dedicated to helping their students succeed. Our emphasis on positive growth, combined with our supportive staff, has helped ensure that students at Mama Hellen’s School reach their full potential. Our students consistently score among the highest at their level in standardized tests, making Mama Hellen’s School one of the best performing schools in South Sudan.

Success is more than just academic performance—it’s also emotional and interpersonal development. Mama Hellen’s Team works with school administrators to develop a culture of empowerment among our students. Parents and community members are encouraged to donate time and expertise to support the school by volunteering at the school and in the community garden. Students are aware that financial donations are helping them further their education, providing an incentive to “pay it forward” by helping others in the future.

Community Engagement Beyond the Classroom

The work Mama Hellen and her team have put into Mama Hellen’s School has left a lasting impact on Abara and other communities in Magwi county. Through persistent outreach, Mama Hellen and her family have become highly respected leaders in the community. To this day, Mama Hellen remains dedicated to building strong relationships among citizens of Central Minnesota and the South Sudanese community in Minnesota, throughout the United States, and in South Sudan. The connections Mama Hellen and her team build domestically and abroad facilitate community involvement; foster open communication from the local people and the members of Mama Hellen’s Team; and enable the Team to respond effectively to changing needs.

One of Mama Hellen’s most successful community programs is a tree-planting initiative intended to address the effects of deforestation and provide students with an education on growing and caring for seedlings. Renewed support for the school in recent years has inspired parents to plant and cultivate community gardens.

Just a Little Hope was composed for Mama Hellen’s School by Irish composer, Mary McAuliff. The song celebrates the joy of learning, the importance of serving others, and reminds us that with a little hope, dreams can, and do come true!
